Take no risks when planning your trip with HanseMerkur’s special COVID-19 travel cover – allowing you to sit back, relax and look forward to your upcoming holiday. The COVID-19 cover can be taken out as an add-on element to our products offering cancellation and trip interruption insurance. The additional cover reimburses you for your cancellation and/or additional travel costs if you are suspected to be, or are, infected with COVID-19.

In cases involving personal isolation at home (quarantine) due to a measure imposed by the authorities or instructions issued by authorised third parties (e.g. a doctor)

Questions and answers

When do I have to take out the additional COVID-19 cover?

Three working days after you book your trip, or up to 30 days before you embark on your trip

You have to take out the COVID-19 travel cover 30 days before you embark on your trip or by no later than the third working day after you book it. If there is a period of more than 30 days between the date on which you book the trip and the date on which you embark on the trip, and if you do not take the insurance out within three working days of booking the trip, insurance cover is only provided for events that occur from the tenth day after the policy was taken out.

You can add the COVID-19 travel cover to an existing (single-trip or annual) cancellation/trip interruption policy taken out with HanseMerkur at a later date. If you are taking out a new single-trip or annual policy, the COVID-19 travel cover can be added to your policy as an add-on.

Am I covered if an entire country or canton is quarantined?

Only in cases involving personal quarantine

We provide cover if you or a person at risk is put under personal quarantine. We do not provide cover if you, or a person at risk, is unable, or is denied the right, to depart, enter a country, continue your trip or transit via a country, for example due to local, regional or nationwide quarantine measures or contact restrictions/curfews imposed by the authorities.

What documents do I submit to make a claim?

Booking confirmation and proof of insurance

In the event of a claim, we need the following documents and information from you:

  • Copy of your booking confirmation
  • Copy of the proof of insurance
  • Policyholder’s address
  • Bank account details for reimbursements
  • Medical certificate

The persons at risk include:

  • Individuals who have booked a trip together with you. Cover is provided for up to six people (no more than two families for family rates)

  • People living in the same household as the insured person
